The Border Collie - A dog for me/us?

The Border Collie is a dog that comes more and more into fashion. That is because he is a very intelligent dog who is able to learn very fast and is of a nice size and good looks. Newspapers and reports on TV often do only show the good sites of the dog, neglecting to say that he needs lots of attention, education and walks. If you want to buy a Border Collie bear in mind that you will have a partner who is used to work. That’s what they have been bred for over years, to help the human beings with the sheep, a hard work for intelligent dogs. The herding instinct is something strong in many Border Collies and some of them cannot live without herding. The BC is NOT the family dog to be satisfied with a walk that lasts one hour or so. He wants to work with his owner, always trying to please and do something special. Of course not every Border Collie needs sheep to have a life full of joy. Other sports will satisfy him, too, like Agility and Obedience. But it is important that he regularly works with his handler on things he has to use his brains for. A neglected Border Collie really can be a pain in the neck. Many of this dogs destroy furniture and things, or get aggressive then. They are looking for a business and some of them try to herd cars, something really dangerous for the dog! So think carefully before getting one. Talk to experienced handlers or/and breeders, visit some Border Collies, read books about them and get to know the breed BEFORE you will buy one. By the way a good breeder will ask you lots of questions before he will even THINK of giving a dog to you. Something you always should remember is that a Border Collie will live 15 years with you and this breed still is very active in high ages. Do you really want to share 15 years of your life with such a dog, are you willing to invest 4-5 hours a day just to satisfy his needs? Will you pay the bill of the vets even if it costs lots and lots of money, will you try to understand your dog and respect him as a partner? Well, then you will get a close friend who will bring so much joy to your life, who will love you and you can trust.

Who will help if I should have problems with my BC in general?

Of course your breeder is the first address when it comes to problems. A good breeder always cares for the dogs he breeds and will help day and night if problems appear. Then you can call Meike Bockermann, she is responsible for the breed in the CfBrH. Her address: Meike J. Bockermann, Kampstraße 36, 27628 Bramstedt, Tel. 04746-725764. Finally you are always welcome to send mail to us, we are always willing to help.

Does the Border Collie like kids?

Normally yes! A well socialised dog should respect every human being and the Border Collies we know all like kids. Of course it is important that the kid respects the dog as well and does not make it angry! You’ll never know how a dog can react if someone e.g. pulls on his tail from the back for fun!

Why should I buy a dog with VDH/CfBrH papers of a good breeder?

There are many reasons. First of all it is guaranteed that you really get a purebred dog, whose pedigree is controllable. Then you will get a healthy dog, vaccinated and eye-tested. Usually the dogs are well socialized and raised in a home where they got lots of love! The Club does have regulations for the breed so you know what you get. To this, a VDH/CfBrH breeder should help you with the dog through its whole life! Every puppy bred by a CfBrH breeder is microchipped of course.
